Why we march
The Million Mushroom March is guided by principles that reflect both scientific understanding and lived experience. These principles shape our advocacy, our messaging, and our approach to reform.

We support policy reform based on credible research and real-world evidence
Decades of scientific study demonstrate that certain plant medicines have therapeutic potential, particularly in mental health and addiction treatment. We reject outdated classifications that claim these substances have “no medical value,” while also rejecting exaggerated or unsupported claims.

We advocate for systems that prioritize patient safety, practitioner accountability, and continuous data collection
The most serious harms associated with plant medicines have occurred in unregulated settings without medical screening, standardized dosing, or emergency preparedness. These risks are known, predictable, and manageable under regulated medical frameworks.

We believe in honoring ancestral traditions and oppose their exploitation
Many plant medicines have been used for centuries by Indigenous cultures for healing and ceremony. We honor these traditions and oppose their exploitation. Respect means listening, protecting cultural context, and ensuring that modern policy does not erase or commodify sacred practices.

We advocate for policies that treat people as patients and citizens, not criminals.
Access to healthcare and bodily autonomy are fundamental human rights. Individuals should be empowered to make informed decisions about their own healing journeys, in partnership with qualified professionals, without fear of criminal punishment.

We do not require agreement on every belief to march together
Our movement brings together people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. We are united by shared goals: safer access, honest policy, and an end to punitive drug laws that cause more harm than good.
